Goths’ Village in Masłomęcz

The reconstructed Goth settlement in Masłomęcz illustrates the life of the Germanic tribes who arrived in this area at the end of the 2nd century AD. Archaeological research provided the basis for distinguishing the so-called the Masłomęcz group, i.e. a cultural unit of the Germanic tribe – the Goths, who were distinguished by excellent economic, social and political organization. The settlement, discovered in 1977, is considered the largest in the Hrubieszów Valley and could probably have served as the “capital of the Małomęcz group”.

Village history

In 2002, 25 years of archaeological research in Masłomęcz was completed. In 2007, the first reconstruction of the Gothic cottage was created. At that time, a reconstruction group of craftsmen and warriors also began to form. In 2010, the Masłomce Association “Village of the Goths” was registered, whose aim is to popularize the cultural and historical heritage of the Hrubieszów region in the country and abroad and to recreate the life, crafts and rituals of people who lived here approximately 1,700 years ago.
